Can you complete the 12 month Idaho ski challenge? Much of the time, 11 months is possible. The elusive September ski will generally crush your streak.
Late Spring
For our fellow Boise ski bums, skiing Bogus Basin in May is the ticket. Claiming last tracks down our favorite home mountain runs, while reminiscing on the recent season. Finding snowpack on North aspects in Southern Idaho isn’t usually a challenge through May.
Pilot peak, north of Idaho City, is another hot spot for late spring snow. With an elevation of 8100′, you should be able to snag an early June line here.
Early Summer
As the first day of summer approaches, it’s time to move north. The Payette National Forest is home to beautiful summer lines. There are numerous peaks that crest above 8000′, with epic north facing couloirs. June, July, and even (sometimes) August skiing exist in these mountains.
The Hells Canyon Wilderness is another option for this time of year. With peaks cresting above 9000′, the summer snowpack is fairly dependable.
Late Summer
August and September is where you really have to work for it. August snowpack can be found high in the Sawtooth, White Cloud, Pioneer & Lost River mountains. Another option is a quick border jump to the Wallowa Mountains in Oregon. Some research is required to figure out the region with high winter snow totals, and modest summer temperatures / rain.
Earning your September badge can require an unseasonable snow storm. This is no casual accomplishment. It can take many years for the stars to align. Claiming the legendary 12 month streak will establish your rank as a top tier Idaho skier.
